I recently returned from a landscape industry event hosted by JP Horizons at the beautiful Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Having attended several….okay, probably more like 20 JP Horizons events in the past few years… I thought I had a reasonable idea of what to expect. Boy, was I wrong.

For two days, 40 owners, partners, and principles of landscape businesses came together with a common objective: make their business BETTER. But the method to do this is very different than the seminars, events, workshops that I have attended and that are common to the industry.

The Owners Network – Lesson #1 – Tell “Your Story”

We all have a story; many in our industry have common threads.

“I started with a mower and a pickup truck.”

Others are very different.

“As a little girl, I use to sit on my dad’s lap while he plowed snow.”

Each had a purpose: the first, to make money; the second, to spend time with my dad.

The Story and The Purpose brought the owners, partners, principles, sons and daughters to where they currently are in their landscape businesses. Telling their story to at least one person is what they are tasked to do.

Why is this important? Stories connect. It is a way to inspire other people, to share common goals, to give purpose to do what we do every day and motivate with direction.
